Du Café, a unique coffee shop combined art gallery is quickly becoming one of the most popular spots in Upington. Whether it is for a quick takeaway on your way to work, a carefully created Kalahari sundown picture-perfect cappuccino with a friend, a business breakfast with colleagues, or a birthday party over the weekend with the family, they love to treat their guests to a unique experience.
The owner’s Dirk and Louise started their guesthouse in Schröder street almost 8 years ago. They knew that this was only the beginning and that one day they will combine it with their love for coffee and Louise’s passion for art. A dream of not only a coffee shop but a getaway from your daily routine with local products and art. Dirk and Louise were in the process of planning this next venture when they saw an advert for the world renowned Coffee Festival in Cape Town. They knew that the time is right and immediately booked their tickets. It was at this festival where a whole new world opened for them and where they made new family in the coffee industry.
As a couple they planned everything to the point. They went to the most sought-after Barista training academy. They searched for the perfect espresso machine and a after days of tasting bean that would fulfill any connoisseurs’ pallet. All the detail of the interior and the uniqueness thereof with Dirk’s, a local business man and contractor, expert hand. They love the rustic earthly tones, but it has to be comfortable.
On 16 August 2019 Du Café opened their doors. There were trying times, no doubt. Not only was it a new business, but lockdown struck them only 7 months later. It took a lot of careful planning, but they have put all their trust in the Lord as they have done so many times before and that is all that pulled them through. The Grace of God. That is all that is still getting them through each day and its challenges.
Today Dirk and Louise are still actively working with their staff. They have been blessed with wonderful staff that became part of the Du Café family. In the kitchen where all the exquisite dishes come to life is head chef WD Theron and sous chef Engela Fourie with their chef’s assistants Duncan Steenkamp and Maureen Malgas. To them food and flavour is a passion and comes from the heart. Waiters Daphné, Nomthandazo and Pumlani serve with their hearts and would surely walk the extra mile for anyone. At the bar they have their barista Watiko. He is absolutely in love with coffee and with his expertise will pour you a cup of sheer perfection. People can’t wait to see what latte art Watiko has poured for them and love to share their photos on social media. This creates a curiosity amongst tourists and local visitors which makes this cozy place more and more popular every day.
What also sets Du Café apart from many other places in Upington is the local art, gifts and delicacies on display and on sale here. For the size of Upington there are a lot of very talented artists and many of them display their art at Du café.
Louise and Dirk still have a lot of plans and dreams for De Nachtuilen guest house and Du café and seeing what they have already achieved one can only wait in anticipation for the rest to come.
Make sure you visit this little gem on 137 Schröder street for your dose of beautiful art, cake, and exquisite coffee. If you are a tourist driving through or visiting Upington, Du Café is certainly a stop to make to enjoy local cuisine, art, and gifts.
