MAKE SURE TO VISIT UPINGTON IN THE NORTHERN CAPE

When knowing the size of Upington in the Northern Cape, one cannot believe how many quality guesthouses like BeMyGuest there are to choose from. Guesthouses in Upington also reflect the local culture because they are all locally owned. That is because Upington is not just a popular stopover for travelers en route to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and the majestic Augrabies Falls. But it’s also a great town to visit on its own!

So what else is there to Upington you may ask besides being an en route town to the above destinations?  Although Upington is situated in the Kalahari desert, the town bulks of green gardens and scenery because of the Orange river running through it, therefore the Green Kalahari.  The river is a popular destination for canoe riders and outdoor fanatics.

The town has a rich Afrikaner boer and KhoiSan culture with beautiful grapevines and pecan nut farms entering from various roads.  Because of the recent inflow of Spanish people to the town, due to the solar power project that started a view years ago, you will also find a bit of Spanish cuisine showing up at some of the many unique and quality restaurants to visit in Upington.

The top four restaurants on our list are the Zest Restaurant at Protea Hotel by Marriott with fine dine at its best.  Here you will find fine dine in everything from the Craft Burger to the pizza with their own dough recipe and muti(tomato paste) as they call it.  You can choose to sit inside at a warm open fireplace in the winter or during the warm summers in the shade outside next to the beautiful pool and close to the pool bar.

At Red Ox you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Orange River and a glass of local wine from Orange River Cellars.

At Bilo Bistro you can also choose to sit outside, looking over a Khoi fish dam with more green fields in the background with Springbok wandering peacefully in the background.  Or inside looking outside through large windows panes enjoying sports in the Sports bar.  This restaurant is great for families with children with a large play area outside but also here you can enjoy some of the best sushi in town.  Their menu boasts with a variety for everyone with the Espatada as one of the favourites among all.

When you want to enjoy some good coffee cuisine with local art be sure to pop in at Du Café on the main road of Upington.

Other locations to visit, rich in the local culture are the Orange River Cellars Tasting Room.   Be sure to try the world class wines from this area and take some with your for family and friends.  They will always love your for it.

If your are visiting the area as a hunter during hunting season make sure to pop in at the local outdoor and gun shop Skietgoed, also on the main road, to get the last minute accessories or a beautiful leather handbag to take with for your lady at home.

Everywhere you go, you can ask what and where to visit next and everyone will have at least one more option to make your stay in Upington more enjoyable.  The people of Upington are warm and friendly and are happy to assist visitors.
